PhD Position (4 year studentship@ €18k [tax free] p.a. + fees) The Centre for Ocean Energy Research (COER) at Maynooth University, Ireland has a further opportunity for well-qualified applicants interested in undertaking a funded PhD.   The successful candidate will be involved in a PhD project to develop a small-scale wave powered data buoy. The primary focus of this project is the development of a reliable, efficient and cost-effective power source for marine sensing, based on data buoy movement due to incident waves. Secondary aspects include the integration of the sensor and data transmission systems within the framework of a holistic system that achieves optimal design compromise between power provision, usage, data transmission rates and stability as a sensor platform. The project will include hydrodynamic modelling, PTO modelling, control system design, optimisation sensor design, data transmission system design, simulation and experimental testing, information dissemination and public engagement. COER are currently involved in an EU Horizon 2020 project (LiftWEC), which involves the development of a novel wave energy converter whose primary coupling with the waves is through the generation of hydrodynamic lift on a rotating hydrofoil. COER’s work package deals specifically with control strategy development. The internship on offer would explore some interesting optimisation problems that can be examined using the model that is being developed. A background in applied mathematics, or other branches of engineering would be preferable. This is an unpaid internship, although we do offer the possibility to participate in a dynamic research environment, working on a topical research area, amongst highly motivated PhD students, postdocs, and other interns. COER are one of the consortium members of LiftWEC,  a European research project funded by the Horizon 2020 Programme. The project will develop a novel type of Wave Energy Converter, called the LiftWEC, which uses hydrodynamic lift forces to extract wave energy using a rotating hydrofoil.
