COER-Wavepiston Passive Control Competition – Launching This October as part of the SHY project

COER is excited to announce the COER-Wavepiston Passive Control Competition, launching this October. This challenge provides a standardised simulation platform where participants can design passive controllers to maximise a specific performance metric across multiple sea states.

Participants must account for the physical constraints of the Wavepiston device, including:

  • Passive Power Take-Off (PTO) — no reactive power is allowed!

  • Limits on position and control force.

This is a unique opportunity for engineers, researchers, and students to test their skills in a realistic, performance-driven environment.

Opportunities for PhD and Postdoctoral Researchers

COER is seeking talented PhD candidates and postdoctoral researchers to join our team:

Postdoc and PhD (€25k per year (tax-free), plus fees and expenses) positions.

Researchers at COER engage in a diverse range of ocean energy projects, supported by industry, national, and international funding sources. With 30 researchers working on 15 fundamental and applied projects, COER offers an exceptional environment to grow your expertise and make a real-world impact.

Areas of Focus Include:

  • Hydrodynamic Modelling and Resource Assessment

  • Fault-Tolerant, Health-Aware, and Energy-Maximising Control

  • Wave Energy Converter (WEC) Lifetime Enhancement

  • Actuated WEC Geometry and Mechanical Motion Rectification

  • Control Co-Design (Geometry, Power Take-Off, Array Layout)

  • Integration of Renewable Energy into Grid Systems

  • Niche Applications of Marine Renewable Energy, including Remote SensingIf you would like to find out more about current and upcoming opportunities, contact John or Carrie (email addresses below).

Maynooth Wave Energy Workshop – Save the Date

The Maynooth Wave Energy Workshop returns for its 9th edition on January 23rd, 2026. This one-day event will feature:

  • Technical sessions and an industry and policy session

  • Poster exhibition

  • Extensive networking opportunities

Whether you’re a researcher, student, or industry professional, this workshop is the perfect platform to exchange ideas and showcase your work. If you would like to receive more information about the MWEW26, contact Carrie or John.
