Biography
John Ringwood, a native of Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, was educated at Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street and at Strathclyde University in Scotland, where he was awarded the PhD in 1985. He was a Senior Lecturer in the School of Electronic Engineering in Dublin City University until 2000, when he was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Electronic Engineering at NUI Maynooth, serving as Head for a five year term to July 2005. He was a visiting Research Fellow at Massey University in New Zealand in 1991/92 and a visiting Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland in 1999. His research interests focus on the development and application of modelling and control systems techniques. John is a Fellow of Engineers Ireland and a Chartered Engineer. John served as Dean of the Engineering at NUI Maynooth from 2001 to 2006. He is currently the Director of the Centre for Ocean Energy Research at Maynooth University.

In wind turbines, this is achieved by turbine pitch control, leading to the ubiquitous flat power curve. Recently, a wave energy converter, having moveable vanes, has been developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in the US. This paper described the development of a compact hydrodynamic model for the NREL device, based on multiple linear hydrodynamic modelling (Murray-Smith and Johansen, 1997), which can be used to model the hydrodynamic behaviour of the device across its full operational spectrum of vane angles. To show the utility of the model, we demonstrate a flat power curve for the WEC, using the vane angles as a control input. |

Using offline-filtered wave time series, AR models can achieve accurate forecasts several wave periods into the future. In this paper, the AR method is examined from the broader perspective of linear, Gaussian processes. In particular, assuming Gaussian waves and perfect knowledge of the wave spectrum, it is possible to derive a theoretically-optimal wave elevation predictor. It is shown that, in realistic situations, AR models can achieve a performance comparable to the theoretically optimal, spectrum-based predictor, both in simulated wave time series and using actual wave elevation records. |
