Biography
Dr. Fabián Pierart is a Mechanical Engineer and holds an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from the Universidad de Concepción, Chile, and a PhD focus in model-based control design from the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). He is an Assistant Professor at the Universidad del Bío-Bío (UBB), Chile, where he has also served as Director of the MSc Programme in Mechanical Engineering. In 2016, he founded the Group of Renewable Ocean Wave Energy (GROW-E), leading research activities focused on marine renewable energy.
His research interests include wave energy conversion, hydrodynamic modelling, numerical and experimental methods, power take-off systems, and the design and control of wave energy converters. His work combines numerical modelling, laboratory-scale experiments, prototype development, and international research collaboration to advance wave energy technologies.
In September 2026, Fabián joined the Centre for Ocean Energy Research (COER) at Maynooth University as a Senior Postdoctoral Researcher on the INFINITY project. His work focuses on advanced modelling, simulation, and control of wave energy systems, including the development of high-fidelity models for model-based control design and performance evaluation. His research also considers the interaction between control strategies, power take-off performance, reliability, and operational costs, contributing to the development of efficient and practically implementable control solutions for wave energy converters.
