🎉Congratulations to Iain McLeod, COER PhD student, whose new paper Free Surface Elevation Estimator as a Sensor for Wave-Powered Data Buoys has just been published in the @IEEE Xplore Journal of Oceanic Engineering. This study addresses the challenge of using 🌊wave energy🌊 to power data buoys, which traditionally rely on passive wave-following motion for accurate measurements. It proposes a Kalman filter-based soft sensor that estimates wave characteristics from a buoy equipped with an internal moonpool and simulates an oscillating water column (OWC) turbine. The sensor effectively accounts for both linear and nonlinear dynamics and accurately estimates wave parameters like significant wave height and zero-crossing period, even under energy-extracting conditions.
